Anastasia Lewis

Anastasia Lewis lives and works in London. Up until 1990, she worked in set and costume design until she returned to Central St. Martins to study Fine Art. Her current work focuses on the grid and using patterns and repetition while retaining individuality to each painted image. “Amongst each collection of images there is always one that is markedly different. This singularity draws the attention not only to itself but also underlines the fact that the apparent uniformity of the rest is an illusion”.

Her work is not an entomological study, but instead, her images are loosely based on photographs from butterfly collections. Lewis states, “there are several reasons why I use the iconic image of the butterfly. They are beautiful, but apparently fragile, and they are complex and mysterious”.
