Photographs and captured film frames – records of looking out into the landscape – form the basis for these recent paintings. The qualities of the source material determine the way the paint is handled and the choice of image may sometimes depend on a fleeting resonance with paintings from the past. Contrasting with but running in parallel to this work, I make close-up studies from observation of plants as they come in to flower, marking the passage of time throughout the year.
