CHRIS GILVAN-CARTWRIGHT
In his paintings and pastel works, Chris Gilvan-Cartwright delineates a shared utopia, without trying to drag it within reach of reality. In the landscapes and visionary scenes that he creates, the make believe of Walt Disney commingles with the Fête Champêtre tradition exemplified by Watteau and Fragonard. The extraordinary light that fills these dream-like spaces filters gauzily through foliage and a hazy atmosphere that would seem to hold the promise of a magical summer's day. In the nocturnal works, exotic blooms emanate light in the depths of the forest: totems of Shangri-la.
